While we’ve been guiding the Big Horn River for many years, we’ve finally found the perfect place to call home. Drake Lodge is located directly on the Big Horn River, just nine miles north of Thermopolis, putting our guests in the heart of some of the best fly fishing, upland bird hunting, and waterfowl hunting Wyoming has to offer.

Winter Fly Fishing on the Big Horn River

Even though it’s winter, the fishing has been excellent. Just last week, temperatures reached the 50s, and the river has been fishing extremely well. The Big Horn River is a tailwater fishery, meaning it stays open and productive year-round and rarely freezes.

If you ever see ice on the Big Horn, you’ll know it’s really cold—but even during cooler temperatures, the trout continue to feed. Rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout are fat and aggressive, feeding heavily on sow bugs and midges. This productive winter bite typically continues well into the spring, making this an outstanding time to fish.
